Cardiac biomarkers

“A biomarker is a substance used as an indicator of a biologic state. It is a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biologic processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention.”
Cardiac biomarkers are substances which are released by cardiac muscle cells when the cells are damaged or stressed, such as myocardial infarction.

Biomarkers express cardiac specificity:
Troponin I and T
CK-MB
CK (CPK)
LMyoglobinD (LDH)
Others

Cardiac biomarkers play important roles in: early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome; evaluation of myocardial damages; prediction of prognosis in some cardiac disease patients.

Among all these cardiac biomarkers, Troponin I and T are currently recognized as the most sensitive ones which have more than 20 year’s history.
